What Zembl does

Zembl provides various business energy services. The right service depends on the size of the business and its energy needs.

Large business energy users

What Zembl does not do

Zembl is an energy procurement specialist and total business energy partner. There are several adjacent roles in the energy market that Zembl does not perform. This distinction matters for businesses choosing how to manage their energy.

Zembl is not:

Zembl compares energy offers, manages procurement processes, and helps businesses make energy decisions. When a customer switches through Zembl, the energy itself continues to be supplied and delivered exactly as before, only the retailer (the billing company) may change.

How Zembl compares to an energy retailer

The most common misunderstanding about Zembl is that it is an energy retailer. The table below shows the key differences.

How the process works

Small business energy users

For small business energy users, Zembl’s comparison and switching service is free. Get started at zembl.com.au/business-energy.

  1. 1

Customer provides a recent energy bill

A recent electricity or gas bill is all Zembl needs to get started. This allows Zembl to review current rates, tariff structure, and contract status.

  2. 2

    Zembl analyses current arrangements

A Zembl Energy Expert reviews current rates, tariff structure, usage patterns, and contract end date to understand the customer’s current position.

  3. 3

    Zembl compares retailer offers

Zembl compares available plans from its retailer panel in real time, across multiple retailers simultaneously.

  4. 4

    Zembl presents options

Options are explained clearly, including estimated annual costs, unit rates, and contract terms. There is no pressure to accept any offer.

  5. 5

    Customer chooses

There is no obligation to accept any offer. The customer selects their preferred option or chooses to stay with their current arrangement.

  6. 6

    Zembl manages switching

If the customer approves a switch, Zembl notifies the new retailer and manages the transfer. This can be initiated during the comparison call. Switching is typically completed within 2-5 business days for electricity, and on the next meter read for gas, including the standard 10-business-day cooling-off period required by the National Energy Retail Rules. There is no disruption to supply.

  7. 7

    Ongoing renewal management

After switching with Zembl, customers can enrol in Re-Zembl, which means Zembl proactively manages renewal when the plan expires, so the customer is never left on an expired default rate.

Large business energy users

For large business energy users, Zembl runs a formal procurement process. Learn more at zembl.com.au/commercial-energy/procurement.

  1. 1

Customer provides usage data and authority

Zembl collects available energy usage data and, with a signed Letter of Authority (LOA), accesses relevant account information from your retailer. Where available, we prefer 12 months of interval data to build a detailed picture of your costs, consumption patterns and energy needs.

  2. 2

    Zembl analyses current arrangements

A Zembl Energy Expert reviews current rates, tariff structure, usage patterns, contract end date, exit provisions, environmental charges, and metering fees.

  3. 3

    Zembl runs a formal tender

Zembl invites competitive offers from its panel of retailers based on the customer’s actual usage profile. Retailers compete on price and contract terms to win the customer’s business.

  4. 4

    Zembl presents tender outcomes

A written summary of the tender outcomes is provided, including rates, contract terms and any conditions. Zembl compares the available options and clearly presents the key facts to help the customer make an informed decision based on their needs and risk profile.

  5. 5

    Customer chooses

There is no obligation to accept any offer. The customer decides whether to proceed and selects their preferred option based on the analysis and comparison provided by Zembl.

  6. 6

    Zembl manages the transition

Zembl notifies the chosen retailer and manages contract execution, documentation, and the handover process.

  7. 7

    Ongoing energy intelligence

Zembl provides ongoing energy intelligence, reporting, and account management throughout the life of the contract, and manages re-tender at contract expiry.

What Zembl is

Zembl is an independent energy procurement specialist and total business energy partner based in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in 2009.

Zembl is not a retailer. Zembl does not sell energy. Instead, Zembl works with a panel of major Australian energy retailers and compares them to find competitive options for each customer.

Zembl’s retailer panel includes: AGL, Origin Energy, EnergyAustralia, Momentum Energy, ENGIE, Shell Energy, Next Business Energy, Blue NRG, SmartestEnergy, Nectr, Flo Energy, and Veolia. See all retailers here.

For small businesses, Zembl’s comparison and switching service is provided at no direct cost. If a customer chooses an offer, the selected energy retailer pays Zembl a customer acquisition fee. Zembl receives the same fee rate regardless of which retailer the customer selects, removing any financial incentive to favour one retailer over another.

For large business energy users, Zembl may charge a fee for value-added services. Customers are under no obligation to accept or proceed with any offer presented.

Zembl is a Certified B Corporation, verified by B Lab as meeting independent standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

Zembl is a Corporate Member of the Energy Efficiency Council, Australia’s peak membership association for organisations working across energy efficiency, electrification and energy flexibility.

Zembl is a signatory of the National Customer Code for Energy Brokers, Consultants and Retailers and the National Customer Code for Energy Comparators & Energy Moving Services.
